Amish Mud Sales near Annville Inn weekly through March

As winter winds down and spring approaches, if you are anywhere around central Pennsylvania, you will begin to hear the term “mud sale” as you mingle with locals. Amish Mud sales near Annville Inn are big events. They often take on the character of fair. Many draw over 20,000 people.

Find treasures at all the Mud Sales auctions. Don’t worry about muddy fields!  According to Discover Lancaster,  the name “mud sale” comes from the muddy condition of the thawing ground in late winter and early spring. Events typically start as early as late February and run through March.

Amish Mud Sales are a Lancaster County original tradition and refer to annual auctions or sales of Amish goods at a number of local fire companies. The sales attract thousands of people looking for bargains. Shop for anything from Amish quilts and antiques to lumber, buggies and lawn equipment.

Auctions feature everything from hand-stitched quilts (donated by the Amish women’s groups) and locally-made crafts to livestock, furniture, produce, baked goods, antiques, housewares, even the kitchen sink are all up for bid.

In a sight that may seem like organized chaos to novice mud sale visitors, six or seven auctions are conducted simultaneously as Amish and “the English” mill together over the many items bound for the auction block.

As the weather warms, the ground is too wet for farming, so Amish and Pennsylvania Dutch folks hold “mud sales.” These outdoor auctions typically feature as many as six or seven auctioneers conducting auctions simultaneously!

Mud sales have been around in Pennsylvania communities for some time and have become a late winter/early spring staple in communities with high Amish populations. Local lore states that Amish communities historically organized the events to support local fire companies.

Livestock, furniture, produce, baked goods, antiques, housewares and More!

Mud Sales can be major events, sometimes bringing in as many as 20,000 visitors, per Discover Lancaster. Typically, six or seven auctions are conducted simultaneously as visitors compete for a variety of items.

Individuals interested in attending a mud sale can expect to find everything from sheds to baked goods. Shop for farm live stock and house plants as well as landscaping plant material. According to Discover Lancaster, visitors will likely find hand-stitched quilts, locally made crafts, livestock, produce, furniture, houseware, and more.

Some auctions are starting to accept other forms of payment, but attendees are advised to bring cash. Additionally, bring a partner to ensure you get the best choice of treasures as multiple auctions occur at once.

In Lancaster County, mud sales are usually held every Saturday at 8 a.m. from late February to April. 

While mud sales can be a huge stimulation to the senses, it’s the perfect chance to experience a piece of Pennsylvania culture.

When are Mud Sales Held?

Historically, Mud Sales have been each Saturday from late February to mid-April. Nowadays, mud sales in some parts of the area are held throughout most of the year. Most sales begin at 8:00 or 8:30 AM sharp, with activities continuing until 2:00 to 3:00 PM for those who wish to catch a glimpse of some local color and enjoy sampling traditional Lancaster County farm fare.

Mud Sales are a mixture of great farm foods such at the ubiquitous chicken corn rivel soup, antique furniture, Amish quilts and much more. Here are upcoming dates for Amish Mud Sales near Annville Inn:
